Product selection
Choosing Natural Stone Flooring
Choose for everyday use
Compare stone type, surface finish, thickness and natural variation. Explain whether the area is indoors, outdoors, wet or heavily used. Confirm suitability for the expected traffic and cleaning routine, especially on steps and wet floors.
Plan the floor
View several pieces together. Agree the layout, edge details and spare quantity with your installer. Check whether the selected stone needs sealing or specialist finishing as part of the budget.
Installation
Installing Natural Stone Flooring
Assess the base
A competent stone installer should check substrate stability, moisture, levels and drainage. Select bedding or adhesive compatible with the stone, including any backing or moisture sensitivity. Plan joints and transitions before work starts.
Inspect progressively
Dry arrange shades and veins, then check alignment and support as laying proceeds. Grinding and polishing, where appropriate, require specialist planning. Protect the floor and observe the specified curing period before normal use.
Maintenance
Maintaining Natural Stone Flooring
Use a stone cleaning routine
Remove grit with a soft broom or suitable vacuum. Mop with a cleaner approved for the stone and its treatment, then remove excess moisture. Do not assume a ceramic-tile cleaner is suitable.
Address spills
Blot spills promptly. Test stain-removal products discreetly and avoid acids on sensitive stones. If marks remain, identify whether they are stains, etching or surface wear before selecting a remedy.
Care
Caring for Natural Stone Flooring
Reduce wear
Use clean entrance mats and protective furniture pads. Lift heavy furniture and protect floors during other building work. Wet surfaces still require attention even when the finish provides better grip.
Maintain appropriately
Review sealing needs for the actual stone and exposure. Deep scratches, loose pieces or a damaged finish should be assessed by a stone specialist. Keep spare pieces and records of any treatments used.
